Band Wagon – Part 1

The Band was four Canadians (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson) and one American (Levon Helm) who became famous as Bob Dylan’s backing band before they started releasing their own albums in the late ‘60s. I think most rock fans reach a certain age and discover the Band’s music which can sound more 1860’s than 1960’s but that was the Band’s mission: to create timeless songs drawn from many musical and historical streams and ignore what was popular or cool at the moment. The Band’s fans and peers took notice and soon many artists were jumping on the “back to basics” bandwagon but it was the Band's wagon and no one was as weird, out of time, and authentic as these five dudes who looked and sounded as if they had just walked out of the Civil War. Here are some of my favorite Band songs. Enjoy!

01. The Band – “Atlantic City” (1993)
02. The Band – “Christmas Must Be Tonight” (1977)
03. Bob Dylan and the Band – “All Along the Watchtower (Live)” (1974)
04. The Band – “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” (1969)
05. The Band – “Across the Great Divide” (1969)
06. The Band – “The Shape I’m In” (1970)
07. The Band – “Acadian Driftwood” (1975)
08. Bob Dylan and the Band – “Million Dollar Bash (Take 1)” (1967)
09. The Band – “Whispering Pines” (1969)
10. The Band – “When I Paint My Masterpiece” (1971)
