Merry Christmas

I’ve always been a fan of classic Christmas albums and there was a time when it seemed every singer had his or her own Christmas collection- Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, the Muppets. Holiday music has always made the Christmas season more enjoyable for me- especially when I'm living overseas- and about ten years ago I started researching and sampling many of the classic Christmas albums. For me, Johnny Mathis’ Merry Christmas is a definitive classic Christmas album.

Not only does Merry Christmas contain a pleasing mix of sacred and secular songs (Johnny seems a bit more comfortable on the latter) but the album simply oozes that timeless Christmas sound which makes you pray for snowy weather so you can settle in front of a crackling fireplace with your sweetheart and/or beverage of choice and let all your cares just drift away. Merry Christmas is great background music for any Christmas situation- adult party, opening up gifts with the kids, or just relaxing at home- and is a sensible starting point for any Christmas album collection. Grade: A
