In late ‘70s America, the soundtrack to
Saturday Night Fever was practically government-issued but if all you know of Bee Gees’ music is
“Stayin’ Alive” then you are missing out on one of the deepest and most impressive catalogues in 20th century popular music. Bee Gees- three English brothers led by Barry Gibb (Robin and Maurice are twins)- formed in late ‘50s Australia and their gradual transition from ‘60s
Beatles-style
folk,
psychedelic, and
baroque pop to ‘70s
soul,
disco, and later adult contemporary makes it difficult to classify their music so let’s just call it
pop. Although I grew up with
disco-era Bee Gees, it wasn’t until the turn of the century when I began discovering the Gibb brothers’ pre-
disco classics which help provide a fuller picture of this prolific group. Here are some of my favorite Bee Gees songs. Enjoy!
01. Bee Gees – “Nights on Broadway” (1975)
02. Bee Gees – “Turn of the Century” (1967)
03. Bee Gees – “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You” (1968)
04. Bee Gees – “Tomorrow Tomorrow” (1969)
05. Bee Gees – “Jive Talkin’” (1975)
06. Bee Gees – “Lonely Days” (1970)
07. Bee Gees – “First of May” (1969)
08. Bee Gees – “In My Own Time” (1967)
09. Bee Gees – “New York Mining Disaster 1941” (1967)
10. Bee Gees – “Lay It on Me” (1970)
